Into The Woods

23rd November to 8th December, 2012
The Arcadians' Miner's Lamp Theatre

A blood thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A quest to find specific objects to break a spell? Sounds like a fractured fairytale! James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods combines well-known fairytales portraying familiar characters and their journey to their happy-ever-after… and after-with a twist!

Into the Woods is a musical masterpiece filled with comedy, haunting melodies and quirky characters galore.  “Into The Woods” takes some well-loved Grimms’ Fairy Tales, and references several others, weaving the plots and characters into a story of love and longing, quests, wishes, and consequences. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, this show is a funny, quirky, Tony award-winning musical masterpiece!

The main characters are drawn from the stories of Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella. However these characters are closer to the original tales than the sanitised versions you’d find in some children’s book: a bloodthirsty Little Red, a sleazy Prince of Charm, and a murderous giant. Tying these plots together is the story of the Baker and his Wife, who desperately want a child. It is their quest that leads them to encounter the other characters and they beg, swindle and steal to get what they need. The show explores themes of moral ambivalence, self-interest, honesty, responsibility, flawed relationships, and the consequences of never being satisfied – of always wishing for something more. The show is an insightful, incisive comedy with beautiful music and a message for everyone.
