The King and I Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

14th to 29th June, 2019
The Arcadians' Miner's Lamp Theatre

East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination.

The King and I is set in mid-Victorian times and is the story of a head-strong young widow and her son who go to the Royal Court of old Siam, to teach the Children of the King. The King is a man trying to modernise his Kingdom, but is caught between tradition and the new world, which is tearing apart all he believes in. Into this chaos the King (east) runs head-on into Mrs Anna (west). She at first finds him to be spoilt and petulant, but as the story unfolds, they both find a great admiration for each other.
This classic musical is probably the best work of Rogers and Hammerstein. It will make you laugh and cry and move you in a way that very few musicals can.  With classics such as Hello Young Lovers, We Kiss in the Shadows and I Have Dreamed this musical has it all and of course, you will long remember that classic moment when the King and Mrs Anna both ask that loving question… Shall We Dance.

The King and I will run for approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes including 1 interval.
